Extra Credit- Future of Democracy

In class we began discussing what we think the future of democracy would be. I believe that as technology gets more and more advanced it will become easier to vote. Once elections can be completely safe to have online I think voting will surge. If more people are able to and plan on voting then the polices of politicians will hopefully take center stage and cause people to make informed decisions. Also, with the internet, it is now easier than ever to look up the facts and policies of politicians making it easier for people to figure out who they relate most to. Also we talked about direct democracy, where people directly vote on policies and laws. I think that this form of democracy could possibly make a comeback with the new technologies available today. I also think that having a weighted system would be the most efficient way of doing this. It would allow the public to entirely make a decision if everyone voted, thereby making this form of government a true democracy. Also it would allow for an elected official to vote on matters that people don't have much interest in or know much about.

If this system were ever to be put into place I think it would be a more pure form of democracy and people would be happier with it. The only few problems I could see with this system is that minorities could have a hard time getting a law to pass. If a certain law only affected one group of people and not too many other people cared, the elected official would be able to completely overturn the decisions and those people would be out of luck. On the plus side though this would be the best way to ensure that everyone has an equal vote and that their voice is heard.
